Ceol Na Mara Summer School for Strings in Connemara, Co.Galway. Ireland

Ceol na Mara Junior

This course is suitable for violinists, violists, and cellists of preliminary to grade 3 standard ABRSM, RIAM or equivalent examining body. We recommend also that they are at least 7 years of age.
*juniors will be divided into 2 groups for much of the time. These will be:

  • Preliminary standard up to grade 1 approx.
  • Grade 2 – 3 approx

This will be based not so much on exam results but on what the tutors consider to be a comfortable yet challenging enough class for each child’s ability

The classes will involve:
Orchestra: where the young musicians will be all together to learn some popular classics.

Chamber music: where they will be in smaller ensembles suitable to each individual’s level to have fun while improving sight- reading and listening skills.

Traditional Irish music/sean Nos In which Odhran and Maired will teach them some Irish tunes by ear to sing and play.

warm ups/ improvisation – TORTURE! : Lisa takes this class where she will lead the children in her own unique style, in songs, chants and actions as well as experimenting with improvisation on their own instrument and with some percussion! She also promises some really hard co-ordination and brain games…(which is where the torture comes in!)

On the final day, Friday, we will have a class concert in the afternoon to which parents and friends are invited.

The overall final Ceol na Mara concert will take place on Friday at 6:30pm in the Teach Ceoil, Tully which will be open to the general public. A representative group from the class may be asked to perform at this also. All participants in Ceol na Mara are invited to attend.
